Advancing Practice Research, Education, and Public Engagement

Across research, teaching, and public engagement, our community at Parsons School of Design Strategies is advancing a shared vision for the future of arts and design education. Faculty, students, alumni, and partners are building new platforms for collaboration, expanding access to creative learning, and strengthening practice research.

In October 2025, we set out a goal to establish SDS as the leader in each of its program domains for students and faculty globally, and the base for artistic and practice-based research movement domestically in three years. The initiatives below highlight key areas where progress during the academic year is shaping a more connected, innovative, and globally engaged academic environment.

Connected Spaces (2025) by Many Design
  • We are expanding structures that empower students and alumni to actively shape the intellectual and cultural life of our community. Newly established Student and Alumni Collectives create ongoing opportunities for dialogue, mentorship, and collaboration across programs. These forums help inform academic priorities while strengthening connections between learning and professional practice.

We are also aiming to increase engagement with recent alumni in the fields ensuring that our programs remain responsive to the needs of a diverse student body and changing global landscape.

    Impact Highlights

    • Student & Alumni Collectives launched across programs

    • Regular community feedback sessions initiated

    • Expanding support for recent alumni

  • Designing spaces for collaboration and creative production

Newly developed shared community spaces on the 9th floor are strengthening the physical infrastructure that supports collaboration, experimentation, and community life.

Designing spaces for collaboration and creative production

Newly developed shared community spaces on the 9th floor are strengthening the physical infrastructure that supports collaboration, experimentation, and community life.

These environments serve as hubs where students, faculty, and visiting collaborators can gather for informal exchange, interdisciplinary dialogue, and creative production. The spaces also support public programming and media production, enabling new forms of engagement between the university and broader audiences. In addition, we are actively looking at activating the space to showcase student and faculty works.

    Impact Highlights

    • New cross-program community space activated

    • Expanded facilities for public programming

    • Dedicated areas for media production and collaboration

  • Enabling interdisciplinary research and collaboration

Supporting faculty research and creative practice remains central to our strategy for growth. We are expanding opportunities for position and elevate faculty work through the framing of practice research. By strengthening connections with partnership and grant development resources, we are helping faculty pursue ambitious collaborative projects that address complex social, cultural, and technological challenges - along with developing an institutional way to develop a peer-review process of non-traditional works.

    Impact Highlights

    • Expanded faculty collaboration across programs

    • Increased engagement with partnership and grant development resources

    • New interdisciplinary research connections in strategic areas like health design

    • Developing a peer review process for experimental works

  • Creating pathways to design education

Access to creative education is fundamental to our institutional mission. Parsons Scholars Program continues to open pathways for talented students from historically underrepresented communities to pursue arts and design education.

In partnership with New York City Community Trust, Parsons Scholars Program is piloting dual-enrollment initiatives that introduce high school students to university-level learning and creative practice.

These efforts strengthen connections between the university and the communities it serves while investing in the next generation of designers and scholars.

    Impact Highlights

    • Continued support for Parsons Scholars initiatives

    • Expanded partnerships with NYC public schools

    • Development of dual-enrollment opportunities

  • Connecting scholarship with global audiences

Our community is expanding its public presence through new events, platforms, and digital initiatives. Our new media initiatives bring leading voices in design, research, and creative practice into conversation with students and faculty. We have also launched the Strategies website and Strategic Practices media series and expanded our digital channels like LinkedIn to share research, creative work, and institutional initiatives with global audiences. Together, these platforms strengthen the visibility and impact of our academic community.
